DIY Folded Fabric Ornament

A great way to personalize your Christmas tree, make a unique family heirloom, or use up some of your fabric stash.

Folded fabric ornaments can be tedious, but are a great way to keep your hands busy while you watch tv, or a fun craft for a friend's night.

I used some leftover fabric I had from other projects. I was even able to make one with some left over pieces from a Family Dress (read more about the Unique Family Keepsake I made.)

Materials

To make one ornament you’ll need:

Instructions

Scroll to the bottom of the page for video instructions.

First, if you are using multiple fabric patterns, you will need to decide how you want them laid out. Pick 2 pieces that will be your focal piece for each side. The rest will be in 4 rows of 4 pieces.

Start on one side and attach your focal piece by pinning the 4 corners with flat head pins.

The remaining of the pieces you will fold and crease each direction to find your center.

The first row, line up each piece up with your focal piece so it sticks a quarter of the way off one side and pin in at the center mark. Fold the square in half, and fold the top two corners down creating a point where the center pin is. Pin down all four corners. Do this for all 4 pieces of your first row.

The second row, you will follow the same steps but line the center pin to be between the first row.

The third and forth rows you will put on top of the first and second rows. When you have all 4 rows done, flip the ornament over and repeat on the other side starting with your focal piece.

To finish and hide your pinned edges, use decorative pins to attach a ribbon around the width of the ornament, and add a loop of ribbon to hang.

And that’s it! Once you get the hang of it, the design options are endless.
